Yuen Long: Nam Sang Wai for waders and wetland birds
February 26
FreeNam Sang Wai – Waders and wetland Birds
Sunday 26 February 2023
An almost flat walk, it begins and ends at Yuen Long MTR Station. We will walk for about 15 minutes from the station to reach the only river-crossing wooden ferry, which is still operating in Hong Kong.
Please bring small change ($7) to pay for the ferry – sorry no Octopus!
We ascend from the ferry at Nam Sang Wai and take the path to the wedding bridge, so called because it is a favorite spot for wedding pictures.
The area adjacent to the river was planted with eucalyptus in the 1950’s.
The path ends at the Kam Tin River, which we follow watching out for the waders. It is usual to see stilts and avocets as well as curlews, cormorants, spoonbills, herons, egrets and other birds. Fiddler crabs, and mudskippers can be seen on the mudflats. This area was once renowned for its fish ponds, but most are abandoned, with only a few near the restaurants still home to grey mullet and grass carp. Sometimes the restaurant hosts a display explaining the history of the fish ponds.Last time we visited this area we saw a mongoose….. so, keep a look out!
We will continue to the Shan Pui River from its junction with the Kam Tin River and make our way back to Yuen Lung Station. There are several restaurants nearby or in the Yoho Mall if you would like a late lunch before returning home.
Meeting Place: Yuen Long Station Exit A Concourse Level. 10.15 a.m.
Please check journey time from your home on Google Maps
